Why I’m focused so much on food now!

Hi everyone, my followers from the start and the newest to join in.  Thanks!

I am Heidi and my mission is to inspire parents to take an active role in the early years of their children’s lives.  I am thankful that my 4.5 year old son gave me signs that I could not ignore that his health was suffering.  After looking into his eczema, ‘ADHD’, ‘Asperger’s’, candida issues/seasonal allergies, sleep apnoea, low immunity, bedwetting, ear infections, dark circles under the eyes and even rough/dry hair, I have:

  • realised the food/chemical sensitivities that not only Master 4.5 has but also our whole family
  • studied and studied the ‘truth’ about what causes these symptoms that many parents ‘put up with’
  • exhausted myself silly!! and taken on stress from others reactions to our approach to healing ourselves

In the meantime, I have also realised how DIRE our children’s future is if we do not start to realise that we are what we eat, many foods are a REAL problem for our children (even ones that the FOOD PYRAMID will tell you is healthy) and how chemicals can affect our health too.

It is easy to think of these ‘little’ symptoms, such as eczema or behavioural issues, as ‘little’ issues.  However, it is easy to forget the affect it can have on:

  • your child’s development now
  • how uncomfortable these symptoms might be for your child (who often doesn’t know any different)
  • and their future health. These health issues are all linked to INFLAMMATION, which only continues onto later adult diseases, also linked to chronic inflammation

So with all of this in mind, I am starting to post more about how to get your family’s health more on track and how to do it slightly more easily than I have done it for the last couple of years.  I am not aiming to scare anyone with health messages, but more just to plant seeds in your mind so that you can share these either with others who might need it, or for the day you might need it yourself.

Inflammation equates to certain health issues, here’s how..

Everyone is better off gluten free?! Yes, and here is why..
Put all your health issues, chronic diseases, childhood issues, every single one out on the table. And then google this + ‘inflammation’. Pretty much every condition is related to inflammation.
Today, it’s not just inflammation that is of great concern but SILENT inflammation. The inflammation we can’t see or feel inside us. This is the precursor to chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders (very common, even among children) and cancer.
So whilst gluten will cause inflammation in the gut, it wreaks even more havoc by causing ‘leaky gut’ which in short, provides a direct route for food particles and toxins to make their way to our brain…hello ‘leaky gut symptoms’ by the dozen.

Of course it’s not just gluten that is responsible for this inflammation we aren’t aware of.  Add in vegetable oils, other refined carbohydrates and a reduced or zero intake of omega 3 oil (which can balance out this inflammation).
Obviously we can ignore and remain oblivious to the fact that our diet contributes to inflammation which contributes to chronic disease (and mostly before it’s too late) but being proactive, especially from childhood, means you’ll never be fighting an uphill battle. And covering issues up with medications…

If this post has caught your eye, you could look into ‘leaky gut’, ‘leaky gut symptoms’, ‘silent inflammation’ or the specific health issue you have OR start thinking about how much Omega 3 oil your family is taking and how you could reduce and ideally eliminate refined vegetable oil and processed carbohydrates (including those with gluten).

Some people have heard a lot about this already and others may not be so aware. The reason I am putting this out there is to start educating more people on the importance of reducing the inflammation in our bodies, whether you can see or feel it!
Amongst all my health lectures, inflammation and Omega 3 oil are the common denominators.

Sun, air and earth for our kids

Can you picture that feeling when you’ve been out for a picnic, seen a bit of sun, experienced some fresh air and had your bare feet on the ground?

There is a reason it is so rejuvenating.  I’ve recently learnt about your body’s real need for vitamin D from the sun (& how the second most common cause of skin cancer is sunscreen, the chemicals we slop on our kids every day); fresh, re-electrified air (not stagnant) and the benefits of receiving ‘grounding’ from the earth, by going barefoot. Simple things but there are scientific reasons for them!  And we also feel good after it too.  Don’t you?

The trouble is, on some days it can be hard to achieve all of these.  Especially when you are at work or too tired to get out of the house with a newborn.  Give it a go when you can and take mental note of how much better you feel after a good dose of nature.

And what about promoting these benefits for your children?  Do you encourage opening their windows?  Do you promote fans over air conditioning?  Do you let them go bare foot here and there?  Do you let them have a small amount of sun exposure each day, without the need for sunscreen?  Do they spend more time indoors than outdoors?

Ps the way we avoid the sunscreen issue is by using a natural one. UV Natural from health food stores.
